3. FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA
FLAMMABILITY CLASSIFICATION:
OSHA: Combustible, Class IIIB
DOT: Not Regulated
FLASHPOINT:
200º F
LEL: N.A.
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Dry chemical
UNUSUAL FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Containers of bronze ink contain combustible oils. When these containers of bronze ink are exposed to excessive heat, such as that emanating form a fire, there may be a build-up of pressure within the container due to the vaporization of oil contained therein, such that the container may rupture or the lid may be blown off. If this should occur, there is a possibility that the combustible oil may ignite.
FIREFIGHTING PROCEDURES: If containers of bronze ink are exposed to excessive heat, such as that emanating from a fire, it may be possible to keep the containers cool by use of a water spray. However, if this is attempted, extreme caution should be used. If the lid is blown off or the container should rupture, immediately discontinue use of the water spray.
SPECIAL FIREFIGHTING PROCEDURES: NEVER USE water or fire extinguishers containing halogenated hydrocarbons to extinguish a fire involving bronze, since it contains zinc. Burning zinc will react with water to liberate hydrogen gas that will spread the fire. Burning zinc may react with halogenated hydrocarbons to form violent reactions. Use only an NFPA Class D fire extinguisher equipped with a low velocity nozzle and containing dry chemical to extinguish bronze ink fire. Direct the fire extinguisher in such a manner that the dry chemical will “rain down” over the burning contents in the drum. If at some point during the fire, the burning contents in the container have the appearance of metal burning with a bright, whitish glow, DO NOT attempt any further efforts to extinguish the fire. If possible, sprinkle the burning contents of the container with fine, moisture-free sand to remove the source of oxygen. Allow the contents to reach ambient temperature before making any attempts to dispose of the burned contents.

4. HEALTH HAZARD DATA
EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE:
Copper metal is slightly toxic. Inhalation of copper or copper/zinc alloy may cause acute irritation of the nose and/or trachea; may produce acute gastroenteric symptoms resulting in vomiting and/or inflammation and/or may cause acute metal fume fever. Exposure of skin to copper or copper/zinc alloy may cause acute dermatitis. In the case of chronic exposure, the liver, kidneys and/or spleen may be injured and/or anemia may develop. Chronic toxicity is confine to those persons suffering form pre-existing Wilson’s Disease.
FOR THE OFFSET INK VEHICLE:
The upper respiratory may be exposed in situations where a mist is present. Ingestion may be possible if materials are not thoroughly removed by washing prior to eating or drinking. Liquid material in contact with the eyes and skin will cause irritation. The toxic effects, if any, are unknown to the distributor at this time.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS PRONE TO AGGRAVATION BY EXPOSURE: The following medical conditions may be aggravated by exposure to copper or copper/zinc alloy:
(A)
Persons afflicted with chronic respiratory disease and/or impaired pulmonary functions, especially those with obstructive airway diseases.
(B)
Persons afflicted with pre-existing liver disease.
(C)
Persons afflicted with pre-existing kidney disease.
(D)
Persons afflicted with pre-existing skin disorders.
(E)
Persons afflicted with pre-existing blood disorders.
(F)
Persons afflicted with pre-existing Wilson’s Disease.
OFFSET INK VEHICLE: The medical conditions prone to aggravation by exposure to this offset vehicle are unknown to the distributor at this time.
PRIMARY ROUTE(S) OF ENTRY: Dermal, inhalation and ingestion.
EMERGENGY & FIRST AID PRODECURES:
SKIN CONTACT:
Immediately wash with soap and water.
EYE CONTACT:
Immediately flush with copious amounts of water and consult a physician.
INGESTION:
DO NOT induce vomiting and consult a physician.

5. REATIVITY DATA
STABILITY:
Stable
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION:
Will not occur
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and in the case of burning brass, copper oxide and zinc oxide.
CONDITION TO AVOID: Smoking, open flames, sparks, heat and other potential source of ignition, including static electricity.
INCOMPATIBILITY
(Materials to Avoid):
Oxidizing agents, acids, alkalies, water and halogenated hydrocarbons.

6. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES
STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED:
Remove all sources of ignition. Wear solvent resistant gloves. Spread inert, absorbent material over spill contents. Use non-sparking scoops and/or shovels and deposit in a steel container for disposal.
WASTE DISPOSAL:
Dispose of in accordance with all local, state and federal regulations.

7. SAFE HANDLING & USE INFORMATION
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION:
If vapor concentrations are at or above the allowable exposure limit, wear a NIOSH approved chemical cartridge respirator that is suitable for organic vapors. In confined areas or enclosed spaces or where vapor concentrations could exceed 1000 PPM, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus with a full face piece.
VENTILATION: Use general dilution type which is adequate to keep vapor concentrations below the TLV-TWA and PEL given sections 1 and LEL given in section 3.
PROTECTIVE GLOVES: Wear solvent-resistant type.
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Wear chemical-resistant apron if a splash hazard exists.
HYGIENIC PRATICES: Always wash hands before eating, smoking, drinking or using toilet facilities.

8. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING & STORAGE:
Avoid spillage. Minimize breathing vapors. Store al drums in a cool, dry area. DO NOT store near water, acids, alkalies, oxidizing agents, halogenated hydrocarbons or combustible materials.
OTHER PRECAUTIONS: Avoid contact with heat, sparks and open flames DO NOT smoke in areas where containers are open.

WARNING:

HEALTH: 2
FLAMMABILITY: 1
REACTIVITY: 1
Hot organic chemical vapors or mists are susceptible to sudden spontaneous combustion when mixed with air. Ignition may occur at temperatures below those published in the literature as “autoignition” or “ignition” temperatures. Ignition temperatures decrease with increasing vapor volume and vapor/air contact time and are influenced by pressure changes.

Ignition may occur at typical elevated temperature process conditions, especially in processes operating under vacuum if subjected to sudden ingress of air or outside process equipment operating under elevated pressure if sudden escape of vapors or mists to the atmosphere occurs. Any proposed use of this product in elevated-temperature processes should be thoroughly evaluated to assure that safe operating conditions are established and maintained. The Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) has been included by Bowers Ink Company to provide additional health and hazard classification information. The ratings recommended are based on the criteria supplied by the developer of the system, National Paint and Coatings Association (NPCA), suppliers of Bowers Ink Company raw materials and the interpretation of available data by the Bowers Ink Company.
